What is kamishibai?: Literally translated as “paper theater/play”, Kamishibai is a Japanese form of storytelling which uses a wooden box as a makeshift “theater” and a series of large paper storyboards. Traditionally presented by traveling performers Kamishibai became extremely popular as a form of free street entertainment in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Although it almost disappeared when televisions became common in households, this form of storytelling is making a comeback for its unique charm to engage audiences and encourage creativity!
