About the event

Experience butoh performers from DAIPANbutoh Collective move through Kubota Garden and respond to its landscapes in evocative and poetic interpretive movement.

What is butoh?: Butoh is an avant-garde dance which erupted out the turmoil of post WWII Japan. Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno are known as the founders of this genre, which combines dance, theater, and improvisation with influences of Japanese traditions and German Expressionist dance to create a unique beauty and grotesquerie.

Location: The program will take place throughout Kubota Garden. Due to the nature of interpretive performance, sites will vary. Volunteers at information tables are available to help you locate the performers.

Parking: Parking at the Garden is available but limited. There is additional street parking on 55th Ave S and Renton Ave S. As with all public parks, we encourage you to leave valuables at home. If you must bring them, store them out of sight before you reach the Garden.

What to expect: This three hour event expects visitors to wander and wonder through the Garden and happen upon dancers in the landscape. Some ways you can find dancers quickly are following the music or asking volunteers for directions.

Cost: This event is free thanks to funding from 4Culture and KGF donors. If you'd like to support keeping this event accessible to all Donate Here.
